Certification and Licensing Requirements for Wisconsin Accountants

Some accounting graduates go on to earn their certified public accountant license. It's required by law if filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, but many accounting professionals earn this designation with the goal of improving their career prospects.

In order to earn a first-time Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license in Wisconsin, you must complete 150 semester hours (including a specific number of business and accounting courses) and earn either an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited institution. You must also pass the Uniform CPA Examination and gain one year of accounting experience. Once this is done and you have submitted your application, you can sit for the ethics exam, which is administered online.

There are also ways to apply to become a CPA through a transfer of credits or through an endorsement. For more information please contact the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services.
