Certification and Licensing Requirements for South Carolina Accountants

In the 2013 edition of the Occupational Outlook Handbook released by the BLS, top job prospects are projected for individuals who earn recognition as Certified Public Accountants (CPAs). Graduates applying for a CPA license in South Carolina must meet a specific set of requirements before licensure can be granted.

Candidates for a South Carolina CPA license must have U.S. citizenship or resident alien status and must have earned a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Prospective South Carolina CPAs also must have completed at least 150 semester hours of college credit and at least 36 hours each in accounting and business courses with no fewer than 24 accounting credits earned in classes taken at the junior level or above. Candidates must also pass the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) ethics exam and submit documentation of having worked for at least one year under the direct supervision of a licensed CPA or other licensed public accountant.
