Certification and Licensing Requirements for Pennsylvania Accountants

Licensure and certification requirements for Pennsylvania accountants vary by occupation and specialty. Many graduates of accounting schools in Pennsylvania go on to become Certified Public Accountants, or CPAs. Becoming a CPA may not only give candidates an edge in a competitive job market, but according to the American Institute of CPAs, federal law permits only CPAs to file reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission, or SEC.

The Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) reports that in order to be certified, CPA candidates must complete at least 150 college credit hours -- including at least 36 semester credits in accounting courses -- and pass all four parts of the CPA Exam within an 18 month period. Candidates must also compete one year -- or 1,600 hours -- of work experience in government, academia or public practice within five years of application. Note that requirements vary slightly for those who completed their accounting degrees before December 31, 2011. Pennsylvania CPAs must periodically renew their licenses -- a process that requires the successful completion of continuing education courses, or CECs. For more information about licensing requirement people can visit the CPA Exam Questions page of the PICPA website.

Career Opportunities for Graduates of Accounting Schools in Pennsylvania

Those who earn accounting degrees in Pennsylvania might consider positions with corporations, accounting firms or in private practice. They may also choose to specialize in a specific industry or specialty, like tax preparation, government or corporate finance. Several major accounting firms have established offices across Pennsylvania, especially with major cities like Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Deloitte & Touche, Earnst & Young, KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers -- the "Big 4" -- all have offices in the state. Other prevalent firms include Grant Thornton, McGladrey & Pullen and BDO Seidman.
