Certification and Licensing Requirements for Oregon Accountants

Those who hold accounting degrees in Oregon might choose to become licensed as a Public Accountant or a Certified Public Accountant. Since federal law requires anyone who files a report with the Securities and Exchange Commission to be a CPA, many employers prefer applicants who hold the license, according to the BLS.

To earn a CPA, aspiring accountants must hold a bachelor's degree with at least 150 semester hours of education. Of those hours, at least 24 must be in accounting and another 24 must be in related subjects, according to the Oregon Board of Accountancy. Also required are an ethics course, competency in seven separate areas of accounting practice, and proof of one year of supervised employment of at least 20 hours per week.

The state offers another option called the Public Accountant license, which requires passing grades on three sections of the CPA exam, including Business Economic & Concepts, Financial Accounting & Reporting, and Regulations. One year of full-time employment or 2,080 hours of part-time employment is also required.

Licenses must be renewed every two years. Continuing education credits of 80 hours, including at least 24 hours each year, are required for renewal. It's important to refer to the state's Board of Accountancy for current requirements and licensing information.
