Accounting Schools in Oklahoma

For some, accounting may be an ephemeral topic, dealing with the quagmire of numbers and money. It is much more than that. It is both a postsecondary major and a possible career pathway, providing individuals with the skills that may help them work as financial analysts, budget analysts, tax examiners, revenue agents, or cost estimators.

Accounting students can learn basic business law, income tax accounting, and auditing. People can earn accounting degrees at multiple levels, and some schools may even offer individuals the opportunity to earn a bachelor's and master's degree in a five year program of study.

Certification and Licensing Requirements for Oklahoma Accountants

Graduates of accounting schools in Oklahoma might choose to become Certified Public Accountants. Under federal law, anyone who files reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission must hold this designation (bls.gov/ooh). State licensing requires completion of at least 150 semester hours of education, including a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related subject. Of those 150 hours, at least 76 must be at the upper-division level, with 30 hours of accounting courses, and 9 hours or more of supporting courses, such as business or management.

In addition, applicants must pass the CPA examination, be of good moral character and submit to a criminal background check. One year of supervised experience is also necessary. All licenses must be renewed regularly, and professional continuing education is mandated. It's important for aspiring accountants to research the specific requirements posted by the Oklahoma Accountancy Board.
