Certification and Licensing Requirements for Ohio Accountants

Those who graduate from accounting schools in Ohio might go on to become Certified Public Accountants. Federal law requires anyone who files a report with the Securities and Exchange Commission to hold a CPA license. Due to this requirement, many employers seek out applicants who are licensed, according to bls.gov.

Those who earn accounting degrees in Ohio can apply for a CPA certificate if they have completed at least 150 semester hours of study with a strong focus on accounting or a related field, according to the Accountancy Board of Ohio. Applicants must be residents of the state, at least 18 years of age, earn a passing grade on the CPA examination and pass a criminal background check. Applicants must also have at least one year of supervised work experience under a licensed CPA and must complete a course on professional standards and responsibilities.

Ohio CPAs need to renew their license every three years. In order to renew their license, professionals typically must complete 120 hours of continuing education over the three years between each renewal.
