Certification and Licensing Requirements for North Carolina Accountants

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) can be attractive to prospective employers. It's also required if reporting to the Securities and Exchange Commission. To qualify for CPA licensing in North Carolina, individuals must meet specific requirements outlined by the state's Board of Certified Public Accountant Examiners. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have passed all sections of the Uniform CPA Examination. Educational requirements include 150 semester hours, with a concentration in accounting and credits in specified subjects such as communications, economics, ethics, law, finance or statistics. Applicants must also complete a course on the North Carolina Accountancy Statutes and Rules as well as submit proof of supervised experience and three certificates of good moral character signed by licensed CPAs.
