Certification and Licensing Requirements for New Jersey Accountants

Graduates of accounting schools in New Jersey may choose to continue their training to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, earning certification as a CPA has the potential to increase an individual's job prospects. Under federal law, only accountants certified as CPAs can file reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

In order to become certified as a CPA in New Jersey, individuals must meet the requirements set forth by the state. According to the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants, students must complete 150 credit hours of higher education, pass the national CPA exam, and meet one of these four requirements as defined by the state of New Jersey: earn an accounting degree from an accredited institution, earn a graduate degree from an accredited business school or college of business, earn a baccalaureate degree from an accredited business school or college of business, or earn at least a baccalaureate from an accredited institution. Students must also complete at least one year of on-the job experience under the direct supervision of a licensed accountant. It may be possible for students to take the CPA exam prior to earning the full 150 credit hours, if they meet certain requirements. Some exceptions may apply, and students interested in accounting degrees in New Jersey should visit the New Jersey State Board of Accountancy website for more information.
