Certification and Licensing Requirements for Montana Accountants

Montana is a two-tiered state, which means individuals earn both a certificate and a license (called a permit to practice in Montana) on their way to becoming a CPA. To become eligible for a certificate, applicants must pass the Uniform CPA Exam, complete an ethics exam, earn 150 hours of college credit, and have graduated with a bachelor's degree or higher from an approved school. For their permit to practice, individuals must meet those requirements plus gain at least one year of work experience in auditing or accounting. Individuals can also apply to become a CPA through a transfer of grades, license, or international reciprocity. For more in-depth licensing information, contact the Montana Board of Public Accountants.
