Certification and Licensing Requirements for Minnesota Accountants

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that individuals who earn the right to practice as Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) should have elevated job prospects in the accounting field. Applicants for a CPA license in Minnesota must qualify for and pass the CPA exam before applying for their certificate, as noted by the Minnesota Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Typically, Minnesota CPA exam candidates must have earned a bachelor's degree and studied at least 24 semester hours of upper-division or graduate-level accounting coursework. Those applying for licensing generally must complete 150 total semester hours, with specific requirements such as 24 hours of accounting and 24 hours of business coursework. Exam and licensing prerequisites can vary according to the accreditation level at a particular institution, so aspiring CPAs should check with the Minnesota Board of Accountancy to determine their specific qualification requirements.

In addition to passing the CPA exam, Minnesota candidates must pass an ethics exam and complete one year of work experience that meets state criteria. The certificate, once awarded, must be renewed regularly. CPAs must earn continuing education credits to qualify for renewal. The Minnesota Board of Accountancy can offer a more detailed explanation of CPA licensing requirements.
