Accounting Schools in Michigan

Completing a college accounting program in Michigan could be a great choice for anyone who enjoys math, has an analytical mindset, and wants to help balance budgets and produce accurate financial reports for businesses or personal clients. Earning a postsecondary accounting credential is a common entry point towards pursuing traditional accountant, auditor and bookkeeper careers, but it could also lead to related positions, including budget analyst, financial examiner or cost estimator.

Accounting schools in Michigan feature postsecondary programs from the certificate to doctoral level. In addition, some schools may allow students to earn accounting degrees in Michigan completely online, part-time, or in a hybrid format -- so prospective students can likely find one that suits their individual goals. Curriculum varies based on program level and school but commonly include instruction in financial accounting and reporting, business law, accounting information systems, accounting ethics, managerial accounting and federal corporate taxation.

Certification and Licensing Requirements for Michigan Accountants

By law, accountants are required to be a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) if they're filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). If not filing with the SEC, some accountants may still want to pursue certification, as it may help them gain clientele or improve their chances of employment according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In Michigan, CPA licensure is granted by the Michigan State Board of Accountancy (MSBA). The board outlines the various requirements for prospective CPAs in the state. Candidates must earn at least a bachelor's degree in accounting, complete at least 150 semester hours of college (with a major in accounting), pass the Uniform CPA examination and complete one year (2,000 hours) of professional accounting experience. The board also requires 30 of the required 150 semester hours to be in accounting and 39 hours to be in at least five other business subject areas, such as statistics, marketing and economics. Individuals should contact the MSBA for the most up-to-date licensure requirements in the state.
