Certification and Licensing Requirements for Massachusetts Accountants

The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that accountants that file with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) require certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Becoming a CPA could also potentially increase an individual's job prospects. Individuals pursuing certification in Massachusetts need to meet the licensing requirements set forth by the Massachusetts Board of Public Accountancy.

The Massachusetts Board of Public Accountancy describes educational, experience and other qualifications for CPAs. Candidates desiring to become CPAs must be at least 18 years of age. In order to sit for the required CPA exam, students must complete 120 of the 150 semester hours needed for certification. To qualify for certification, candidates must earn a bachelor's degree from a nationally or regionally accredited institution, with 30 undergraduate semester hours (or 18 graduate-level semester hours) in accounting subjects, such as financial accounting, taxation and auditing. Candidates must also complete 24 semester hours of non-accounting coursework in subjects such as economics and business law. In addition to passing the exam, applicants typically need to complete 1,000 hours and at least one year of public accounting work.

Students interested in becoming CPAs in Massachusetts should spend additional time researching the state's professional licensure requirements.

Career Opportunities for Graduates of Accounting Schools in Massachusetts

Students working toward accounting degrees in Massachusetts can explore opportunities in a wide range of specializations, and the state offers the fourth-highest concentration of accounting and auditing jobs in the nation, the BLS notes. Graduates of accounting schools in Massachusetts may find work in tax preparation, bookkeeping, and payroll services or in finance and insurance. The BLS counted 34,360 accountants and auditors employed in the state in May 2012. The Boston-Cambridge-Quincy area alone accounted for 23,200 accountants and auditors in that year, giving it the seventh-highest employment level for these professionals out of all metropolitan areas in the U.S.

The level of education needed for a particular accounting career can vary depending on the employer and the specific position. However, accountants and auditors generally need a bachelor's degree to gain entry into the field, the BLS notes. On the other hand, bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks may only need a high school diploma or some postsecondary education to get started. Individuals in certain accounting careers, such as budget analysts, may find that a master's degree is sometimes preferred.

Massachusetts hosts branches from the "Big Four" accounting firms of PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte, Ernst & Young and KPMG. Other accounting firms in Massachusetts include but are not limited to the following:
