Certification and Licensing Requirements for Maryland Accountants

Becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) can improve one's employment prospects or grow one's clientele, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). CPA licensing is also required for those filing reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

CPA applicants must meet their state's educational requirements and pass the Uniform CPA Examination. The Maryland Board of Public Accountancy notes that in order to sit for the exam, individuals must complete 120 semester hours of credits and earn at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education. Of the total required semester hours, 27 must be in accounting and related subjects, and three must be in ethics. 80 hours of continuing professional education credits are required for each stage of an applicant's licensing renewal.

The Washington-Arlington-Alexandria metropolitan area, which covers part of Maryland, ranked third nationwide in employment of accountants and auditors in 2012, the BLS reports. In that area, the hourly mean wage for those professionals was $40.54, and the annual mean wage was $84,320 in 2012.
