Accounting Schools in Illinois

pMaintaining organized finances is essential for any business, from one-man entrepreneurial ventures to global Fortune 500 firms. Accounting professionals give companies a clear picture of their finances, so they can make effective business decisions moving forward. This can include preparing taxes, performing audits, and a host of other services.

Possible career paths for graduates of accounting schools in Illinois include becoming a bookkeeper or Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Some accounting grads may move into related positions, such as financial analyst or budget analyst. With enough experience and education, an accounting background may even help individuals rise to executive management or become a college professor.

Accounting programs are traditionally available at several levels, from associate to master's degree, depending on the school or university. Additionally, programs may be offered in several formats, including campus-based, online-only or in hybrid format, which combines both campus-based and online learning.

Certification and Licensing Requirements for Illinois Accountants

Accountants with professional certification, especially Certified Public Accountants (CPA), may find better employment prospects, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (bls.gov/ooh, 2012). In fact, an accountant must be a CPA to file a report with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). To obtain a CPA license from a state, accountants must pass the Uniform CPA Examination and meet state-specific requirements.

According to the Illinois Board of Examiners, applicants in the state must have earned at least a bachelor's degree and completed 150 semester hours of postsecondary coursework from an approved school, with 30 hours in accounting and at least 24 in non-accounting business subjects. The Illinois CPA Society states that CPA applicants also must have worked full-time for a year providing accounting, consulting or advisory services. Lastly, candidates must pass the ethics examination course provided by the American Institute of CPAs. Once licensed, CPAs must take continuing education courses to renew their licenses at regular intervals.

For complete details and the latest CPA requirements, contact the Illinois Board of Examiners.

Career Opportunities for Graduates of Accounting Schools in Illinois

Graduates with accounting degrees in Illinois who wish to stay in the state may find a range of accounting-related job opportunities awaiting them, especially near Chicago. According to the BLS, nearly 70 percent of state's 41,910 accountants and auditors in May 2012 were concentrated in the Chicago-Joliet-Naperville metropolitan area, which had the fourth-highest employment level in the nation for these occupations (bls.gov/oes, 2013).

All of the "Big Four" accounting firms -- Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers -- have a presence in Chicago. Firms such as ORBA, Sikich, and Wolf Financial Group are also headquartered in the state. More information on these and other accounting firms in Illinois can be found below.

Combined with professionals leaving the workforce, 1,500 job openings should be available each year for accountants and auditors. In August 2013, Chicago was named the 9th best city to find a finance job by Accounting Principals, a national staffing agency (reuters.com, 2013).
