Accounting Schools in Florida

Accounting degree programs traditionally prepare students for careers in major areas: public and government accounting, auditing, credit analysis, tax preparation and more. However, because accounting is a multi-focused discipline, numerous other potential career options exist for graduates of accounting schools in Florida. Those with the right education and training could make professional contributions to fields ranging from management consulting to post-secondary teaching.

Depending on personal needs and professional goals, prospective students can enroll in an accounting degree program that fits their needs: campus-based, online-only or hybrid. Accounting degrees in Florida are available at several levels, including associate, bachelor's and master's. Some schools in the state may also offer certificate or diploma programs in accounting as well.

Florida Schools: Accounting Programs

Certification and Licensing Requirements for Florida Accountants

According to 2012 research from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, accountants and auditors who earn professional job recognition as Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) should have better job prospects than those who do not. An accountant filing a report with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is required by law to be CPA. These professionals are licensed by their state's board of accountancy after passing a national exam and meeting other requirements.

Florida's Division of Certified Public Accounting outlines the criteria to obtain a CPA license. Applicants who meet the qualifications, including 120 semester hours of education, can sit for the Uniform CPA Examination. Those who pass can submit an application for licensure, with evidence of one year of acceptable accounting experience and 150 total semester hours of education. Education requirements include upper-division accounting and business courses such as taxation, auditing, accounting information systems and business law.

Prospective candidates looking into campus and online accounting schools in Florida should engage in additional research on state requirements.

Career Opportunities for Graduates of Accounting Schools in Florida

Graduates with accounting degrees in Florida may find various work opportunities depending on their education level and interests. Those with associate degrees and an interest in public policy may look for bookkeeping jobs at a government agency while bachelor's or master's degree holders could pursue accountant roles at one of Florida's many private accounting firms.

The "Big Four" accounting firms -- Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers -- have offices in Florida. For more information on these and other accounting firms in Florida, browse the following list:
