Certification and Licensing Requirements for Delaware Accountants

When it comes to acquiring a license, accountants are required by law to be a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) if they're filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, many choose to get one regardless, as it can enhance job prospects (bls.gov/ooh, 2012).

There are a number of specific education and experience requirements that hopeful CPAs in Delaware must meet. According to the Delaware Board of Accountancy, applicants must have at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and have finished a minimum of 150 semester hours of postsecondary education. At least 24 of those hours must be comprised of accounting coursework covering approved topics, such as taxation or business law. They are also required to pass the ethics course given by the American Institute of CPA's. Lastly, they need at least one year of professional accounting experience after they graduate. Requirements are subject to change, so be sure to check with the Delaware Board of Accountancy for the latest information.

Other certifications are also available to Delaware accountants, including the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) from the Institute of Management Accountants and the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) from the Institute of Internal Auditors.
