Certification and Licensing Requirements for Connecticut Accountants

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) notes than any accountant wishing to file a report with the Securities and Exchange Commission, or SEC, needs to become licensed as a Certified Public Accountant, or CPA. As 2013 BLS data shows, becoming a CPA could improve an individual's job prospects, even if he/she isn't required by law to do so.

According to the Connecticut Society of CPAs (CTCPA), a bachelor's degree from an accredited school is indeed needed to sit for the exam and a score of at least 75 percent is needed on the exam to pass. Other requirements to earn CPA licensure include two years working under a CPA and an additional 30 college credits for a total of 150. The 30 additional credits can be completed while in the process of taking all four parts of the exam or after the exam is completed. Finally, applicants must pass an ethics course and exam from the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA). Requirements are subject to change, so check with the CTCPA for current licensing regulations and more details.

Most states require CPAs to continue taking classes to keep their license. Accountants may also seek other types of certification to show competency within a specific specialization in accounting and auditing, according to the BLS (bls.gov/ooh, 2012). Some places to seek certification may include The Institute of Management Accountants and the American Institute of CPAs.
