Certification and Licensing Requirements for Colorado Accountants

Accountants who file reports with the SEC must be CPAs. The Colorado Board of Accountancy describes various steps for aspiring CPAs to gain and keep licensure in the state:

  1. Education. A bachelor's degree from an approved college or university program. Requirements may differ based on when the degree is received and the date of the certification application.
  2. CPA exam. The state requires a bachelor's degree plus completion of a certain number of semester hours, typically 120, in order to take the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Exam. A specified number of credit hours should be in accounting and other business administration topics.
  3. AICPA ethics exam.Prior to being licensed, CPA candidates must pass an ethics examination given by the American Institute of CPAs.
  4. CPA license. Accountants with the required education (generally 150 semester hours), who have passed the CPA Exam, passed the AICPA ethics exam, and met other requirements such as work experience, can file an application for a Colorado CPA Certificate. License applicants are typically required to have approximately 1,800 hours of professional experience.
  5. Continuing education. Colorado CPAs need continuing education (usually 80 CE hours within the two years before the date of applying) in approved subject areas to keep their licenses current.

Prospective students should check with the Colorado Board of Accountancy for the latest state requirements for accountants. The Colorado Society of CPAs is also a good resource.

Licensed CPAs can go on to earn professional certifications from the American Institute of CPAs, including Accredited in Business Valuation (ABV), Certified Information Technology Professional (CITP) and Personal Financial Specialist (PFS). Accounting professionals may also become Certified Management Accountants (CMAs) Certified Internal Auditors (CIAs) or Certified Information Systems Auditors (CISAs) by obtaining certification through other professional agencies.
