Certification and Licensing Requirements for California Accountants

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, accountants who become professionally certified, including gaining CPA licensure, should enjoy better job prospects over those who don't. In addition, accountants who file reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission must be CPAs.

A licensing examination is required before an accountant can become a CPA, and the state of California requires that certain specific educational targets be met before an applicant can sit for the exam. The California Board of Accountancy states that beginning January 1, 2014, candidates for California CPA licensing are required to have at least a bachelor's degree, consisting of no fewer than 150 semester units in total. Of those semester units, 24 must be in accounting subjects, 24 in business-related subjects, 20 in direct accounting study and 10 in ethics study. The 20 units of study in accounting and the 10 units of ethics coursework will be new requirements, as of 2014.

Prospective students looking into accounting schools in California and who are interested in becoming a CPA should learn more about the state's licensing requirements by contacting the California Board of Accountancy.

Career Opportunities for Graduates of Accounting Schools in California

A range of professional specialties exist for graduates with accounting degrees in California, with a corresponding range of requirements for an applicant's level of education. Bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerk positions, for example, are options for those who earn a certificate or associate degree. Other accounting occupations, such as accountants, tax examiners and auditors, usually require a bachelor's degree, and some employers seek candidates with an MBA or other related graduate degree.

Several of the biggest international accounting firms -- Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers -- have locations in multiple cities in California, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, Irvine and San Jose offices for these global powerhouses. The following table provides examples of other accounting firms that operate in California:
