Certification and Licensing Requirements for Alabama Accountants

After completing a program of study in accounting, many professionals continue their training to earn a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation. To qualify to take the CPA exam, the state of Alabama requires a bachelor's degree in accounting or related field, as well as completion of 150 semester hours of post-secondary education.

These hours are broken down into additional requirements, including 33 semester hours of accounting classes, 27 hours of non-accounting business courses and 3 hours of business law. Applicants must be a citizen or legal resident of the U.S., be at least 19 years of age at the time of the exam and meet specific work requirements. Once the CPA is earned, accountants may need to complete continuing education credits in order to keep the license active. More information can be provided by the Alabama Society of CPAs or the Alabama State Board of Public Accountancy.
